The California Primary Election will be held on June 7, 2022.

Every registered voter in California will receive a ballot in the mail about a month before Election Day. You can choose to return the ballot by mail, drop it off, or vote in person.

View your ballot, find out where to vote, and learn about the candidates using our unbiased online voter guide, Voter's Edge

Who you get to vote for in this election depends on which districts you live in. In California, district lines are redrawn every ten years by an independent commission based on changes in the Census. In this election, you may see changes in who you are voting for and where you vote as districts may have changed.

Federal and State offices: Your ballot will include candidates for the U.S. Senate, U.S. Representative in Congress, Governor, Lieutenant Governor, Secretary of State, Controller, Treasurer, Attorney General, Insurance Commissioner, Member of State Board of Equalization, State Superintendent of Public Instruction, State Senator, State Assembly Member. For these contests:
  • You may choose any candidate on your ballot, from any political party.
  • The two candidates who win the most votes in the primary will run against each other in November, regardless of party preference.
  • For State Superintendent of Public Instruction or for voter-nominated offices in special elections (such as the short-term Senate contest), a candidate who receives more than 50% of the votes in the primary wins the contest without  going into the general election. If no one wins more than 50% in the primary, the two candidates with the most votes will run against each other in November.
County and local offices: Your ballot will also include candidates for county and local offices. For these contests:
  • A candidate who receives more than 50% of the votes in the primary wins the contest without going into the general election.
  • If no one wins more than 50% in the primary, the two candidates with the most votes will run against each other in November.
Why are there two Senate Contests on the ballot?
The two contests for U.S. Senate on this ballot are for different terms. You can vote for both contests:
  • Full-term seat: 6-year term starting January 3, 2023 and ending January 3, 2029.
    • The top two winners of the primary contest will run against each other on the November ballot.
  • Short-term seat: (Special Election): Term ending on January 3, 2023.
    • This contest is to fill the remainder of the term Kamala Harris won in 2016, which ends in January 2023. The winner of this contest will hold the office until January 3, 2023.
    • Alex Padilla is currently holding this seat. Governor Newsom appointed Padilla to fill this seat until the Special Election could be held.
    • A candidate who receives more than 50% of the votes in the primary wins the contest without going into the general election. If no one wins more than 50% in the primary, the two candidates with the most votes will run against each other in November.
