County Clerk Brandi Orth made a presentation to the Board of Supervisors in February regarding the election procedures for the 2020 elections. This was a preliminary report on the possible ways to conduct the primary and general elections.

  • Brandi said that current equipment was more than 20 years old and in need of replacement.
  • She indicated that the county could continue with the current method of voting or change to the Voter Choice Act procedure or do a combination of both.
  • The Voter Choice Act procedure would reduce the number of polling places but increase the number of days that voters could drop off their ballots and eliminate the need for provisional voting. Supervisors asked for an analysis comparing the costs and benefits of the alternatives. A decision on the voting method will be made at a later date.
  • The Elections Department also held a series of Community Meetings in February throughout Fresno County to discuss the options related to transitioning from the traditional polling place model to the Voter’s Choice Act model and to receive input from citizens.
  • If the new model is adopted there will be additional community meetings to inform the public.
  • LWVF has been asked to be a part of an Advisory Committee for Voter Choice Act implementation.  This committee will determine 50 best locations for Vote Centers and 31 Ballot Drop off locations, details in the linked description.   League has also been asked to serve on Education and Outreach Committee so if you have ideas or suggestions, please contact Liz Shields at 578-5670 or elizs [at] fresnostate.edu.
