UCI Law Professor Michele Goodwin sent an invitation for our LWV Long Beach members to this event.

I am writing to bring an important event to your attention and to personally you and membership of the League of Women Voters  to attend.  The event, Reinventing ReEntry, is focused on working through the challenges of the formerly incarcerated reentering society.  I came to think about these issues in deeper and more meaningful ways through work with the White House during the Obama administration as well as through my work with the ACLU.  This event is important for our California community, particularly as recidivism rates are high, but they often reflect the difficulties of reentering society--and this could also mean reentering our spiritual environments.  Often women and girls are uniquely impacted even though they are typically left out of discussions about mass incarceration.  Frequently, their recidivism rates are high, because they have virtually no support when reentering society.  Sex work is a potent example.  Class and race also play out in stunning ways.

We will be joined by a special guest, Sue Ellen Allen, the President and Founder of Reinventing ReEntry.  Her organization is based in Arizona, but has been featured at the White House as well as universities across the country, including Columbia University and many others.  In particular, this event is a simulation, which allows us each to personally engage in considering what constraints and limitations are placed on those seeking to reenter society, including related to housing, food, transportation, employment, and more.

This event will be hosted on Friday, February 22, 2019 from 8:30am-11:00am at the University Club , Building 801--here at UCI.  Breakfast will be served.
