2020 is a big year. Here at the League of Women Voters of Los Angeles, we are taking on 3 initiatives to kick off the new year.
SCHOOLS & COMMUNITIES FIRST: In 2020 voters have an opportunity to do something big. We can reverse decades of disinvestment in communities, and restore funding for our schools, first responders, healthcare, and vital services. We can stop big corporations from cheating our communities. Together, we can make our voices heard for Schools & Communities First. The November 2020 ballot measure that will reclaim $11 billion every year for our schools and local communities by ensuring that corporations and wealthy property owners pay their fair share.

Yes In My LA: There are currently almost 60,000 people experiencing homelessness in Los Angeles County, a 23% increase in the homeless population from the previous year. Many factors have contributed to this increase. A shortage of affordablehousing is one. Stagnant wages is another. Since the 1930s, civic leaders have been working to find sustainable solutions that ensure all people have stable housing. Governments and nonprofits have built up decades of learnings which have paved the way to a better solution: permanent supportive housing.

2020 Census: Every 10 years, people across the country and in California fill out the Census in order to have an accurate count of all people in the United States. The Census determines California’s federal funding for important community services that help support our families and fair share of representation in California and Washington D.C.The next Census is in Spring 2020. Let’s ensure all Californians are counted so we can put those resources to good use here at home!
