LWV of Mendocino County enthusiastically supports The Grassroots Institute (GRI) in their recommendation for the use of American Rescue Plan (ARP) funds to implement critical initiatives to reduce the adverse impacts of the climate change emergency.

Our local Mendocino County League of Women Voters is a member of the LWV California Climate Change Task Force, a group of over 300 League members across California who are working on climate action.  As stated in the Climate Emergency Resolution that was unanimously adopted in June of 2019, LWV of California called upon local leagues to “advocate for ‘Climate Emergency Declarations’ and urgent relevant action by state, county and local governments.”

LWV of Mendocino County encourages, at a minimum, full implementation of the three initiatives recommended by the GRI.  More is needed, but these initiatives are a good start for the common good of all Mendocino County residents:

  • Installation of Photovoltaic (PV) Panels on Public Buildings;
  • Installation of Additional Electric Car Charging Stations;
  • Transitioning Public Transportation to Electric Vehicles

These investments will benefit the planet while bringing specific benefits to Mendocino County by making public buildings and transportation more resilient to energy emergencies and making our county more attractive to tourism.  All will start to pay off immediately and continue to yield for decades.

Using ARP funds to establish sustainability will be a good investment and a clear statement about Mendocino County’s commitment to reducing the impacts of the climate emergency.  The existing drought emergency shows in stark terms that we have no time to lose.  Action is needed now.
