National Popular VoteYou may be hearing more about the National Popular Vote. The LWVUS believes that the direct-popular-vote method for electing the President and Vice-President is essential to representative government. The League of Women Voters, therefore, supports abolition of the Electoral College through a Constitutional amendment.  Until that is accomplished, however, the League supports the use of the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact as one acceptable way to achieve the goal of direct popular vote for election of the president until the abolition of the Electoral College is accomplished.
The National Popular Vote Interstate Compact (NPVIC) is an agreement among a group of U.S. states and the District of Columbia to award all their respective electoral votes to whichever presidential candidate wins the overall popular vote in the 50 states and the District of Columbia. The compact is designed to ensure that the candidate who wins the most popular votes is elected president.
