"Volunteering is the ultimate exercise in democracy.  You vote in elections once a year, but when you volunteer, you vote every day about the kind of community you want to live in."  --Marjorie Moore

Volunteer Opportunities

Voter Service and Registration

We receive many requests from community groups to provide speakers on ballot issues, and we hope to reach out to new communities that previously have not taken advantage of our services.  We need people to staff tables at various city wide special events, talking to people about issues and distributing publications.

Contact Deborah Shefler at or call the office at 510-834-7640.  Read more about Voter Service and Voter Registration!

Right Now!  Be an Observer for the Police Commission!

Here’s your chance to be a Road Warrior, observing and reporting on Oakland's Police Commission, a new and unique agency that oversees the Oakland Police Department's policies, practices, and customs as well as the Community Police Review Agency, which investigates police misconduct and recommends discipline. Reporting on the Commission is a challenging and fascinating assignment, because it is through Observer Corps reporting that LWVO is able to monitor City government and take action as necessary.  We are excited to hear from you.  Send your contact information to Gen Katz -
