Hello League Members,
The holiday season is a great time to consider the impacts of our food system and how we all can reduce our carbon footprints by doing something as simple as sending our food scraps to a compost pile or anaerobic digester facility instead of a landfill.
Currently, about 18% of the waste that Californians send to landfills is food scraps. When organic waste in landfills decomposes, it produces methane, a powerful greenhouse gas (GHG). For this reason, the state has set the ambitious goal to reduce the amount of organic waste that is sent to our landfills by 75% by 2025.https://www.calrecycle.ca.gov/climate/slcp
