An Action Appeal from The Surfrider Foundation

Many of California’s beaches are doomed to disappear due to the inevitable sea level rise heading our way. Only with smart planning NOW can we save these places we love, these places that make California our home and one of the most popular destinations in the world.

One small city is currently trying to take our beaches away. On Wednesday, Oct. 16, the California Coastal Commission will decide whether or not to accept Del Mar’s Local Coastal Program (LCP) Amendment. The LCP is a document that guides how the city prepares for sea level rise. The staff version of the plan provides a clear path forward for Del Mar to prepare for the future by maintaining a beach that everyone can enjoy, but property managers and private property owners are fighting for a plan that instead values private homes above public access, calling for the costly band-aid of sand replenishment and permanent reliance on beach-destroying seawalls.

If the wrong plan is accepted in Del Mar, then we stand to lose similar battles all along California’s coast, which means the loss of our beaches in the near future.

We must respond by urging the Coastal Commission to accept the Del Mar’s Local Coastal Plan Amendment only with staff’s modifications.

  1. Show your support by attending the California Coastal Commission Meeting in Chula Vista on Wednesday, Oct. 16.
  2. If you can’t be there in personmake your voice heard by sending the email we’ve created. Your support provides an important signal to cities all around California that the beach needs to be preserved and protected for everyone to enjoy – and that we will fight to keep it so!

Let’s send a message that we won’t stand down on smart sea level rise planning!
