Panel Discussion: Homelessness in Orange County
What works now and in the future to solve homelessness
Homelessness is the major social issue of our time. On January 22, nearly1000 homeless people were cleared from the Santa Ana river trail in Anaheim—with no plans for relocation by the city or county. Moving them around, is not a solution for the homeless.
- Becks Heyhoe, Manager, Housing, Orange County United Way, will describe their educational efforts on the homeless, particularly the UCI study and seminars.
- Heather Stratman, CEO of ACC-OC, (Association of California Cities of Orange County) will describe her group’s seminars and roundtables on homelessness
- Thomas Hatch, City Manager of Costa Mesa, will detail his city’s extensive efforts for the homeless, a model for other Orange County cities. He mentors other cities, like Huntington Beach.
- Helen Cameron from Jamboree Housing will describe their facilities which provide permanent care for the homeless as well as allotting 20% of their housing for mentally ill and disabled.
The panelists will address aspects of the problem from community education to on-the-ground work of cities, shelters and permanent housing.
This is a wonderful opportunity to learn more about the homeless—what is being done and what needs to be done.
