Topic: Communicating with the Transgender Community
Speaker: Michelle Dennis, Former LWVLA Treasurer
Michelle Dennis came out as transgender in 1999 and has been a transgender activist in the greater Los Angeles area since 2002. Michelle's objective is to help create pathways for transgender and gender non-binary persons to participate effectively in all aspects of society. To this end, she has spoken at universities, colleges, and public and private organizations about the transgender and gender non-binary communities, and become the first transgender member of various organizations. She is also a speaker for PFLAG Los Angeles.
Michelle served as Treasurer of the League of Women Voters of Los Angeles, 2015-2018. For the 2016 election, she created the first ever collaboration between an LWV organization and the transgender community to register and empower transgender voters, and was instrumental in causing the Los Angeles County Registrar Recorder to train poll workers to respectfully interact with transgender and gender non-binary voters. This program is now being replicated in ten California urban counties for the 2020 elections through a grant received by the LWVLA.
