First proposed in 1923 and passed by Congress in 1972, the Equal Rights Amendment was subsequently ratified by only 35 states at that time, falling short of the 38 ratifications required. Since then, several states have ratified the Amendment and Virginia became the last state necessary to ratify it in 2020.  Where do we stand today?

Carol Moon-Goldberg, past president of the California League of Women Voters, has been a member of the League for over 25 years.   After practicing law for a time, she retired and began volunteering while raising her two children, and has served at both the local and state levels, including as co-president of the Sacramento League.
