Lula Dean’s Little Library of Banned Books
Author: Kirsten Miller
What's funny about banning books? Stanislaus Women Voters club will talk about it - ModBee.com, March 24, 2026
Synopsis: Beverly Underwood and her arch enemy, Lula Dean, live in their tiny hometown of Troy, Georgia. Now Beverly is on the school board, and Lula has become a local celebrity by embarking on a mission to rid the public libraries of all inappropriate books—none of which she has actually read. What Lula doesn’t know is that a local troublemaker has stolen her wholesome books, removed their dust jackets, and restocked Lula’s library with banned books. One by one, neighbors who borrow books from Lula Dean’s library find their lives changed in unexpected ways.
Join us for a discussion with the author, moderated by Dr. Shannon Stevens, CSU Stanislaus Journalism Professor. Sarah
Dentan, Stanislaus County Librarian, will also share the Library’s Collection Development Policy.

The Woman’s Hour: The Great Fight to Win the Vote by Elaine Weiss - September 30, 2026
Nashville, August 1920. Thirty-five states have approved the Nineteenth Amendment, granting women the right to vote; one last state–Tennessee–is needed for women’s voting rights to be the law of the land. The suffragists face vicious opposition from politicians, clergy, corporations, and racists who don’t want black women voting. And then there are the “Antis”–women who oppose their own
enfranchisement, fearing suffrage will bring about the nation’s moral collapse. And in one hot summer, they all converge for a confrontation, replete with booze and blackmail, betrayal and courage.
