The League's Observer Corps needs Volunteers.
Do you have a few hours a month to help ensure local government transparency and accountability by volunteering for the Observer Corps? The League of Women Voter's of Sussex County could use your help.
Observer Corps Covers Variety of Meetings
Our Corps covers Sussex County Council, Sussex County Planning & Zoning Commission and various school board meetings. We have a growing group covering County Council and the school boards, but right now we need additional help on Planning & Zoning coverage. A long-term P&Z Observer, Connie Jones, has taken on many other League responsibilities and we need some of our members to continue this coverage. P&Z meets at 6 PM on the second and fourth Tuesdays of each month. The meetings are in County Council chambers in Georgetown.
Choose Once a month or Once Every Few Months
You can choose any level of involvement in covering meetings – whether once a month or once every few months. All volunteer levels help us achieve our goal. All that’s required is to be a neutral observer of the meeting, wearing a LWV identification badge, and complete a simple LWV form about the meeting. This form is then emailed to the League Observer Corps Chair. The Chair consolidates these reports into a monthly summary for the League’s Board.
Learn About Your Community
Whether a newcomer or a long-time resident, the Observer Corps is an excellent way to learn about issues and activities that are important to your life in Sussex County. And Planning & Zoning meetings are an integral part of County action. By observing just one meeting, you can have a direct impact on government transparency and accountability.
