Hawai'i County

The League of Women Voters works at local, state and national levels to educate policy makers and the public on pressing issues, and takes concerted action to achieve positive change in our communities.

The League of Women Voters of Hawai'i County has been a part of the Big Island community since the 1960s. Members of the Hawai'i Island League work on local, state and national issues that they are passionate about, such as protecting voter rights and transparency and ethics in government. Currently, as of February 2021, fifteen residents of rural subdivisions on Hawaii Island have been interviewed.  They are from Orchidland, Fern Forest, Fern Acres, Hawaii Ocean View Rancho Estates, Hawaiian Acres, Ainaloa, Hawaiian Terrace, and Hawaiian Orchid Isle Estates.

The commonest themes of malfunction obtained from those interviewed so far:

League’s national redistricting campaign, PPFM, began its second year last August. In the first year, Hawaii focused on celebrating League’s Centennial and the census (getting out the count).

In Year 2, our emphasis will be support for automatic voter registration (AVR) at the state level and support for U.S. Congressional bills, specifically HR 1 or For the People Act and HR 4 or the Voting Rights Advancement Act (VRAA). Talking points of the two Congressional bills are available.
