LWV Chicago has several standing committees that meet throughout the year. Some of the committees assist with the administration of the League, while others focus on education, advocacy, or voter service.

Individuals interested in learning more about the League are welcome to join committee meetings. This is a great way to be introduced to the League and its activities. Please check the calendar for any and all committees that interest you.

Chicago Government Committee

Margaret Herring, Chair

This Committee is newly launched in the 2017-18 year. Initial plans call for observing Chicago City Council and its Finance Committee, investigating the quantity and quality of information on the city's website, and understanding the city's budget process with an eye towards improving its transparency and accessibility. The Committee will review both current League positions as well as state statutes under which the city must operate.

Communications Committee

Cathy Potkay, Chair

The Communications Committee spreads the word about the Chicago League news and events, both to members and the public. Committee members assist with social media posts, website updates, and email communications. The Committee would like to expand into video recording, too. If you like to tweet, post, write or take pictures, this could be the group for you.

Cook County and MWRD Governance

Members interested in these government bodies can participate in the LWV Cook County Budget and Structure Interest Group.

Criminal Justice Interest Group

Members interested in criminal justice can participate in the LWV Cook County Criminal Justice Interest Group.

Diversity and Inclusion Committee

Sarah Bury, Chair

This Committee takes steps to meet the League's commitment to having a diverse membership of women and men from different backgrounds, including race, ethnicity, religion, gender or gender preference, education, and income level.

Education Committee

Rae Sokolow and Nancy Brandt, Chairs

The Education Committee monitors issues related to education policy and public education financing in the city of Chicago and in Springfield. The fiscal concerns of the Chicago Public Schools System and its oversight and accountability are just some of the Committee's current topics of interest. Given the significant interest in education expressed by members, the Education Committee has formed two groups to accommodate schedules, with daytime and evening meetings.

Environmental Committee

Sarah Bury, Chair

This Committee investigates matters of public environmental health policy. How will Chicago honor its commitments under the Paris Agreement, as Mayor Emanuel has pledged? What is the city doing to address heavy metal contaminants, such as lead and manganese? Join the committee to help develop League positions on these and other environmental topics.

Health and Hospital Systems

Members interested in health care can participate in the LWV Cook County Health and Hospitals Interest Group.

Housing Affordability

Members interested in the topic of housing affordability can participate in the LWV Cook County Housing Affordability (HARD) Interest Group.

Membership Committee

Patricia Graunke, Chair

The Membership Committee works to attract new members and keep existing members engaged in League activities. Membership works with other League Committees to ensure members at all levels of interest may participate in the democratic process. The Membership Committee also plans periodic social events so members can meet and mingle.

State of the City Committee

Leslie Chenoweth, Esta Kallen, and Catherine Enright, Chairs

This committee plans the Chicago League's major fundraiser of the year, the State of the City Luncheon, held each spring. The State of the City is an informative program that is open to the public. Planning for the 2018 event is underway. If you enjoy event planning, this is the committee for you.

Voter Services Committee

Helene Gabelnick, Chair

This committee is preparing for the General Election on November 6, 2018 and the Municipal General Election on February 26, 2019. It also guides members to become Deputy Voter Registrars and Election Day poll watchers; holds voter registration events; and provides regular education on voting, the candidates, and the issues. Get involved with planning and participating in voter registration drives and candidate forums.
