Volunteers are essential to the League of Women Voters. Without volunteers, we would not be able to fulfill our mission. Here are some of our current volunteer opportunities.

If you don't see an exact fit for what you are looking for, reach out to league@lwvchicago.org. We'll try to match your interests with one of our committees or upcoming events.

Voter Education and Registration

LWV Chicago provides Deputy Voter Registrar training, organizes and staffs registration drives, and trains volunteers to moderate candidate forums and debates. Find out how you can get involved in voter service here.

Serve on LWV Cook County's Board

LWV Chicago is in need of a member to represent us on LWV Cook County's Board of Directors. As our Local League Rep, you are a full member of the Board with full voting rights. The Rep will serve as a conduit between the LWV Chicago and LWVCC, sharing what is happening in Chicago with other local Leagues as well as learning what other localities are up to and bringing back new ideas for us to try.

The LWVCC Board meets once a month from 10 am to noon on the 2nd Tuesday of the month at the League offices on Michigan Avenue. Interested persons are welcome to attend a Cook County League Board meeting. The next meeting is Tuesday, Sept. 10.

LWV Cook County also needs observers for the Cook County Board, the CC Health Board, the Forest Preserves and the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District. For more information on working with LWVCC, feel free to contact Pris Mims at mimspa@aol.com.

Observer Corps

LWV Chicago is always looking for volunteers to attend government meetings as part of our Observer Corps program. Find out more details and contact information on our Observer Corps page.

Develop Events and Programs

We’ve had a successful beginning for our ongoing Drinks and Dialogue program, and now we need some people who will work toward making this a regular part of the LWV agenda. This group could also decide to work on having additional events.

Drinks and Dialogue is a series of programs, usually held in a restaurant or bar where they offer private or semi-private space, where we have a specific topic and speaker who presents a 20 minute program and then invites discussion. Attendees usually buy a drink, and we have ordered an appetizer to share. Venues could be anywhere in the city, and should move to different areas of the city to encourage attendance from members and friends all over the city. In the past, timing on this has been 5:30 - 7 p.m., but that could also be subject to change.

If you are interested in this group, please contact Pat Graunke at league@lwvchicago.org.

Become a League Connector

Connectors reach out to new members, invite them to upcoming events, and acquaint them with neighborhood Units, committees, and other League activities. The League Connector program is a great opportunity to meet people and learn more about the League.

A Connector does not have to be an expert on everything, but she should have an idea of how to Connect a new member with League opportunities based on their interest and skills. If you are interested in this group, please contact Pat Graunke at league@lwvchicago.org.

Communications

There are several opportunities to help our Communications team reach current and prospective members. To express interest or find out more information, please fill out and submit this form.

We could use people who are interested and/or skilled in the following areas:

  • Writing, editing
  • Taking photos, video
  • Graphic design
  • Website maintenance
  • Email (We use MailChimp)

Committee Involvement

LWV Chicago has several committees that meet on a regular basis—click here to see a complete list. Committee activities range from periodic event planning to coordinating advocacy efforts on League positions to assisting with League administration activities.

Depending on your availability, you can simply attend regular meetings to lend your input and guidance, or you can lead or assist on project tasks during the month.

Attend an upcoming LWV Chicago committee meeting to learn more about committee tasks and volunteer opportunities. Check our calendar for upcoming meetings. RSVP or send additional questions to league@lwvchicago.org.

Neighborhood Units

Units provide opportunities for members to meet in small groups to discuss issues and organize local action. They meet monthly in neighborhood locations around the city. Individuals interested in learning more about the League are welcome to attend Unit meetings, which are open to the public. This is a great way to be introduced to the League and its activities.
