Volunteer

Volunteers are essential to the League of Women Voters. Without volunteers, we would not be able to fulfill our mission. Here are some of our current volunteer opportunities.

Voter Registration Opportunities

LWV Chicago is coordinating registration drives leading up to the November 2018 election. If you would like to get involved with planning or working a drive, contact Helene Gabelnick, Voter Service Chair, at league [at] lwvchicago.org

Several LWV members are taking the lead in four types of locations around the city. Contact the individuals noted to get involved in these specific projects (you can also email league [at] lwvchicago.org to get more information).

  • high schools - Pat Wilder
  • city colleges - Laura Ring
  • retirement communities - Melanie Norstrom
  • public libraries - Nancy Martin

Time Commitment: 3 hours per shift

Next Steps:

  1. Fill out this Cook County Jail Project form
  2. Become a Deputy Registrar (If you already are, great! If not, check the LWV Chicago calendar. The League regularly sponsors training!)
  3. Attend Cook County Jail Training 101 (Details provided in above form)

You may also contact Julie Shelton at league [at] lwvchicago.org for more details on jail visit training and how to sign up.

Develop Events and ProgramsBack to top

We’ve had a successful beginning for our ongoing Drinks and Dialogue program, and now we need some people who will work toward making this a regular part of the LWV agenda. This group could also decide to work on having additional events.

Drinks and Dialogue is a series of programs, usually held in a restaurant or bar where they offer private or semi-private space, where we have a specific topic and speaker who presents a 20 minute program and then invites discussion. Attendees usually buy a drink, and we have ordered an appetizer to share. Venues could be anywhere in the city, and should move to different areas of the city to encourage attendance from members and friends all over the city. In the past, timing on this has been 5:30 - 7 p.m., but that could also be subject to change.

If you are interested in this group, please contact Pat Graunke at league [at] lwvchicago.org.

Become a League ConnectorBack to top

Connectors reach out to new members, invite them to upcoming events, and acquaint them with neighborhood Units, committees, and other League activities. The League Connector program is a great opportunity to meet people and learn more about the League. New members would be helpful on this new team, as they know what worked or did not work for them.

  • Welcome new members to the League
  • Help them learn about the League’s mission, values, and goals
  • Invite them to upcoming events
  • Acquaint them with League operations, including committees and neighborhood Units
  • Match their skills and interests to League activities
  • Encourage them to follow the League on social media
  • Lead them to more information about the League and its work

A League Connector will:

  • Reach out to a new member in a timely fashion—within the first month of the date the new member joined
  • Plan to meet with the new member, either in person or by phone
  • Commit to making at least one Connection with new members each month
  • Serve as a link between new members and the Membership Committee

Who can be a League Connector?

  • Any member who is comfortable discussing League programs and activities—length of time as an LWV Chicago member is not important
  • Any member who has attended and is familiar, or wants to become familiar, with League activities such as Unit meetings, Committee meetings, Briefings, and Chicago in Focus events
  • A Connector does not have to be an expert on everything, but she should have an idea of how to Connect a new member with League opportunities based on their interest and skills

If you are interested in this group, please contact Pat Graunke at league [at] lwvchicago.org.

Adopt a BeachBack to top

Make a difference for the health of the Great Lakes! Join LWV Chicago for a fun morning cleaning up at the 57th Street Beach on June 24 from 9-11 a.m. Volunteers will work in groups of 2-4 and, in addition to collecting trash, will collect data that may help develop solutions to pollution problems. Instructions and necessary equipment will be provided. Bring a sun hat and sun block. RSVP to Pat Graunke at league [at] lwvchicago.org.

LWVUS ConventionBack to top

We are looking for some volunteers to help with the LWVUS Convention, to be held June 28 - July 1, 2018 at the Hilton Chicago. There are a variety of jobs and time slots, so take a look and sign up for what you'd enjoy best. As a volunteer, you are welcome to attend any plenary sessions being held on the day you are volunteering.
