On Oct 5, starting at 7 pm, the League of Women Voters Highland Park/Highwood and GoGreen Highland Park will jointly host a meeting to discuss the National Wildlife Federation’s Natural Habitats Certification program. As League members know, our national League has identified climate change as a serious threat and has assigned high priority for League activity and support: “the League supports climate goals and policies that are consistent with the best available climate science and that will ensure a stable climate system for future generations.” The Natural Habitats Certification program is aligned with this priority, as it aims to encourage more natural habitat development by individual home owners and community organizations and less reliance upon chemically treated turf and gas-powered leaf removal.
Guest speaker for this meeting will be Leslie Shad, the co-founder of Evanston’s successful National Habitat Evanston initiative. Collaborating with GoGreen Highland Park in this joint meeting, our League members will have a chance to learn more about the program and the steps taken by Evanston to earn NWF certification as the first city in Illinois to be awarded the NFW Community Wildlife Habitat certification. We will also discuss strategies for collaborating with GoGreen Highland Park to identify other organizations in Highland Park to help us launch a Natural Habitat initiative in our city.
Please save the date for this meeting, which will be held via zoom. Registration is required at this link:
