STATEMENT ON THE CANCELLATION OF TUESDAY'S PROBATE JUDGE CANDIDATE DEBATE.

Late Thursday evening, October 18, we received word, via the Democratic Party chairperson, that candidate Jason Cichowicz is no longer able to participate in the St. Joseph County Probate Judge Candidate Debate scheduled for October 23, at Indiana University South Bend, due to travel. Mr. Cichowicz is unable at this time to commit to a specific date on which the debate can be rescheduled.

After reviewing the pertinent guidelines and regulatory considerations and consulting with the League's national organization and with officials at IU South Bend, we have decided to cancel the event with the hope that we can reschedule a two-candidate debate before the election.

The American Democracy Project and the League of Women Voters are disappointed that we are unable to include the scheduled St. Joseph County Probate Judge Candidate Debate in our significant lineup of candidate events and voter tools, which include publication of Vote411.org, our online voter guide, plus seven live-audience events featuring St. Joseph County candidates, including a Meet-the-Candidate-Forum scheduled for Monday, October 29th from 6:00 - 8:00 P.M. at the St. Joseph County Public Library. We hope voters will take advantage of these opportunities to learn about the candidates on their ballots.

Based on candidate statements, both were looking forward to the debate. We remain hopeful that the Probate Judge Candidate Debate will be rescheduled. Voters value the opportunity to hear candidates as they respond to voter questions in a side-side format that allows for direct comparisons. The sponsoring organizations view such events as an important part of the "job interview" process.
