This week, Congress will be heading home for two weeks. This home-work period should be a time for them to meet with their constituents and hear about support or opposition to the issues being debated in the Washington D.C.
That includes the For the People Act in the U.S. Senate. This legislation is an historic opportunity to expand voting rights, enact ethics reform, and limit the influence of big money in politics. And it’s up to us to make sure every single Senator supports this legislation.
In the Senate, the For the People Act faces an uphill battle. But we know that because of the tremendous work we’ve already done to mobilize the effort around this bill, that we can move this forward. The phone calls, rallies, in-district meetings, non-violent direct actions, marches, letters to the editor, and so much more-- that you and others like you have worked on-- helped pass this bill in the U.S. House on March 8.
The League of Women Voters is calling on U.S. Senators to hold a hearing on this bill. The American people deserve to know why their Senators don’t want to ensure every eligible citizen being able to register and vote. They deserve to know what harm will be caused by taking the politics out of redistricting. Finally, they deserve to know why we should be allowing big money interests to hide in the shadows and influence the votes of the American people.
This legislation isn’t a power grab by politicians, it’s a power grab by the American people. Contact your Senators today. Tell them you stand with the League of Women Voters.
Together, we can fix our democracy.
