New advisory group brings cross-sector expertise to guide national democracy initiative

WASHINGTON, DC — The League of Women Voters of the United States today announced the formation of the Unite and Rise 8.5 Advisory Committee, a diverse group of leaders from across sectors who will provide strategic counsel and elevate the campaign’s mission to protect and strengthen democracy through partnership.

Launched in May 2025, Unite and Rise 8.5 is the League’s nationwide initiative to mobilize 8.5 million people in defense of democracy and voter participation. The campaign’s third phase, from November 2025 through January 2026, focuses on deepening collaboration across organizations, communities, and industries to expand reach, meet people where they are, and build lasting democratic resilience.

“Our democracy is strongest when we lead together and reach communities beyond the voting rights ecosystem,” said Celina Stewart, CEO of the League of Women Voters of the United States. “Partnerships are how we move from moments of resistance to movements of resilience. By bringing together trusted voices and new allies, we’re laying the groundwork for an inclusive democracy that can withstand challenges, grow stronger for generations to come, and unite our country.”

The Unite and Rise 8.5 Advisory Committee includes:

  • Erica Chenoweth, Political Scientist and Activist
  • Sheri Collins, Director of Sales and Marketing, Speaking Division, The Shark Group
  • Errin Haines, Managing Editor, The 19th
  • Larissa May, Founder and Executive Director, #HalfTheStory
  • Bishop Dwayne Royster, Executive Director, Faith in Action

These advisors will work with the League to strengthen the campaign’s strategic vision, identify opportunities for greater impact, expand the campaign’s influence in different sectors, and help the League build authentic relationships with new communities across the country. Their collective experience across media, faith, academia, and business fields will help the League meet this pivotal moment with innovation and intention.
