WASHINGTON & MINNEAPOLIS – The following is a joint statement from LWVUS CEO Celina Stewart and LWV Minnesota Executive Director Michelle Witte:
“The League of Women Voters is shocked and horrified by the tragic and targeted killing of public servant and Speaker Emerita of the Minnesota House of Representatives Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark Hortman, as well as the shooting of State Senator John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette Hoffman. We extend our deepest condolences to the Hortman and Hoffman families, their loved ones, and the communities they have served with dedication and integrity.
“Violence has no place in our democracy. Political violence undermines the very foundation of our civil society, where differences must be addressed through dialogue, respect, and the democratic process—not through fear and intimidation.
“We stand in solidarity with all those affected by this horrific act and express our profound gratitude to the local law enforcement officers whose swift and courageous response prevented further loss of life. Their actions remind us of the importance of protecting our democratic institutions and those who serve within them.
"We hold Senator Hoffman and Yvette Hoffman in our hearts and are hopeful for their full and swift recovery.”
