League of Women Voters Statement on Colorado Supreme Court Ruling

Type:
Public Statement

WASHINGTON, DENVER — The League of Women Voters of the US and the League of Women Voters of Colorado issued the following statement in response to the Colorado Supreme Court ruling that former President Trump is disqualified from holding the office of President and therefore cannot be listed as a candidate on the 2024 presidential primary ballot:

“The Colorado Supreme Court’s ruling marks the first time a presidential candidate has been determined ineligible from holding the office of President and disqualified from appearing on the state's presidential primary ballot for actions related to an insurrection. Colorado’s highest court is not the only court considering President Trump’s eligibility to appear on a state’s primary ballot, which means voters nationwide need clarity.

“The League of Women Voters recognizes that the legal determination that President Donald Trump is ineligible for the White House under the US Constitution is likely to be resolved by the US Supreme Court. We hope the Court will issue a swift and decisive decision that provides clarity for voters in Colorado and other states during the upcoming presidential primary election season.

“For more than a century, the League of Women Voters has worked to empower voters and to ensure everyone is fully represented in our democracy. We hope the Supreme Court will decide this matter once and for all so that voters receive the clarity they deserve to vote with confidence.”
