League of Women Voters Statement on Weekend Shootings in North Carolina and HBCUs

Type:
Public Statement

WASHINGTON, DC — “The League of Women Voters is deeply concerned and saddened to learn of the tragic loss of life and injuries that occurred at two historically Black university’s homecomings this weekend, and in Robeson County, North Carolina. At a large gathering in Robeson County, two people were killed and at least 13 others were injured, including minors. During homecoming celebrations at Lincoln University one person was killed, and six others were wounded. At Howard University, five people were injured.

Universities and homes are places where people expect to have a level of safety. These senseless tragedies are one more assault on Americans' ability to feel safe and secure in our borders.

We strongly condemn every instance of gun violence, especially when it invades places meant for fellowship, celebration, and learning. Our democracy depends on communities being able to gather safely, engage in dialogue, and participate fully in civic life without the threat of violence. Our elected leaders must enact solutions to protect our students and our communities, including passing comprehensive gun safety reform.

The League stands in solidarity with the victims, their families, and their communities — including the students, faculty, and alumni of Lincoln University, Howard University, and the residents of Robeson County. We must work together to protect every gathering, every celebration, every school, and every neighborhood from the recurring tragedy of gun violence.

The League will continue to demand that elected officials do their jobs to ensure the safety of the American people.”
