WASHINGTON, DC — Following the Senate’s early morning vote confirming Todd Blanche as Attorney General, the League of Women Voters released the following statement opposing his confirmation:  

“Our democracy cannot function if the Department of Justice is treated as a political instrument instead of an independent guardian of the rule of law,” said Celina Stewart, CEO of the League of Women Voters. “The American people deserve an Attorney General who will protect constitutional rights, defend the freedom to vote, safeguard civil society, and administer justice without political interference. Todd Blanche's record demonstrates that he is unwilling or unable to meet that standard.” 

In a letter to the Senate Judiciary Committee last month, the League noted that Mr. Blanche’s nomination presents an extraordinary conflict-of-interest concern. As the president’s former personal lawyer, Mr. Blanche’s appointment raises fundamental questions about the independence and impartiality required of the nation’s chief law enforcement officer.  
   
Mr. Blanche’s tenure as Deputy Attorney General and Acting Attorney General has blurred the line between independent law enforcement and partisan politics, allowing political interests to influence prosecutorial decision-making and eroding public confidence in the Department of Justice. The League is particularly concerned about Mr. Blanche’s failure to protect voting rights through actions that risk intimidating eligible voters and promoting narratives that undermine trust in elections, and any actions that target nonprofit organizations and civic groups engaged in lawful advocacy. 

“The Department of Justice must remain independent, impartial, and accountable to the rule of law,” Stewart added. “Confirming an Attorney General whose record raises serious questions about that independence will further erode public trust in our democratic institutions. The Senate has a duty to ensure that the nation’s top law enforcement officer can serve the Constitution without fear, favor, or political influence. Todd Blanche has not demonstrated that he can meet that standard. This is a deeply distressing moment for the country and democracy.”
