WASHINGTON, DC — The League of Women Voters of the United States denounces any political leaders and candidates using language that invokes violence.

In these final days before Election Day on November 5, it is essential that campaign rhetoric reflects respect for democratic processes and prioritizes the safety and dignity of all people. In particular, the League condemns any and all threats of violence toward women involved in our elections. From candidates to poll workers to election officials, women power our democracy. This dangerous rhetoric threatens a peaceful and fair election cycle.

Violent, inflammatory, and racist rhetoric is dangerous. According to a recent League of Women Voters/UMass survey, more than 60 percent of voters are concerned about political violence this election cycle. It undermines trust in our democracy and threatens the safety of voters, election workers, and our communities.

During this final weekend of campaigning, the League urges candidates to prioritize civility. In this critical moment, we all share a moral obligation to protect the integrity of our electoral process.

Together, we must call out threats and heinous acts of violence, especially those made against women, and ensure a safe, respectful, and democratic election that upholds the values of our nation.
