WASHINGTON, DC — Today, League of Women Voters CEO Celina Stewart, Esq., issued the following statement about the League’s amicus brief filed in the US Supreme Court case, Bost v. Illinois State Board of Elections:
“The League of Women Voters is proud to file a brief today in support of access to justice for organizations like the League who serve voters. The League routinely challenges state voting laws that are not only discriminatory and burdensome for voters, but also directly and negatively impair the League’s ability to carry out our core work: voter outreach, registration, and engagement.
“Anti-voter legislatures are attempting to close the courthouse doors to us and our partner organizations who seek justice for voters, and we won’t stand for it. We will fight to ensure access to justice for those that are directly harmed by anti-voter and anti-democracy laws.
Like the rest of us, Representative Bost deserves his day in court. While we strongly disagree with the merits and arguments of his underlying case, a ruling stating that he has no legal standing to bring this challenge could further restrict access to the court for groups like the League.
Election laws and rules can directly affect voters, candidates, campaigns, and civic organizations committed to voter engagement work and often disproportionately impact historically disenfranchised communities. The League is committed to keeping the courthouse doors open to voters who are harmed by state action, including the League itself.”
