Public Statement

NEW YORK AND WASHINGTON, DC — The League of Women Voters, the League of Women Voters of New York State, and the League of Women Voters of the Mid-Hudson Region issued the following statement following reports that the US Department of Justice (DOJ) has sought documentation from the Ulster County Board of Elections:

“Free and fair elections are the foundation of our democracy. Local election officials work diligently and transparently to ensure that every eligible voter can cast a ballot and that every ballot is counted accurately. Actions that appear to target local election offices without clear public justification risk undermining confidence in our electoral system.

“The League of Women Voters rejects any government action that fuels fear, confusion, or doubt about the integrity of New York’s elections. We call on federal authorities to respect established legal processes, safeguard sensitive voter information, and ensure that any investigative actions do not interfere with the lawful, nonpartisan work of election officials.

“The League stands in support of the Ulster County Board of Elections and all local election administrators who continue to carry out their duties faithfully amid increasing political pressure. Voters deserve transparency, stability, and confidence—not intimidation or uncertainty. The League will continue to monitor this situation closely.”
