Public Statement

WASHINGTON — Today, the League of Women Voters of the United States PresidentDianna Wynn and CEO Celina Stewart issued the following joint statement on the anniversary of the January 6th attack on the US Capitol:

“On the four-year anniversary of the events of January 6, 2021, we must remember the lessons of our past and commit to a better future for our democracy. The actions that took place at the US Capitol Building — the home of the legislative branch of our government — left a lasting imprint on our collective consciousness, reinforcing our mission to protect our freedoms, safeguard our elections, and promote peaceful transfers of power. We learned most of all, the sacredness of preserving democracy.

The events of January 2021 threatened the foundation of our democracy and the principles that the United States was built upon. As we move forward, policymakers and voters must work to strengthen our institutions, uphold the rule of law, and ensure our leaders remain accountable to the US Constitution.

In the four years since that historic moment in our nation’s history, we have seen communities join together to rebuild and heal what was fractured. This renewed commitment demonstrates that our democracy is a privilege that we must invest in daily.

On this anniversary, let us dedicate ourselves to these tenets. Together, we can build — and vote for — a just, unified future where the ideals of our democracy are preserved in the United States of America for generations to come.”
