Helping the formerly incarcerated re-enter society and register to vote is a passion for Annette Scott, a board member of the the League of Women Voters of Monmouth County.
And Scott, of Neptune, was recently recognized for her work at an event hosted by the New Jersey Reentry Corporation last month.
The celebration took place at the Governor’s Reentry Training and Employment Center, 195 Campus Drive, Kearny, and honored Scott for her "tireless work and advocacy on behalf of people with a history of incarceration and restoring their right to vote."
Scott is the founder and director of the LWVMonmouth's "Reenter-Register-Vote" program, and has advocated for returning citizens since 2018, according to league co-president Evelyn C. Murphy.
Scott and her team have registered more than 5,000 citizens to vote and "planted seeds of interest that she hopes will grow into full participation in our democracy," according to a news release prepared by Murphy.
The New Jersey Reentry Corporation is a nonprofit agency with a social mission to remove all barriers to employment for citizens returning from jail or prison. Its website is full of information about programs to help those formerly incarcerated find employment.
Former Gov. Jim McGreevey is chairman of the nonprofit's board.
According to his LinkedIn page: "My professional goal is to assist in changing the punitive nature of American incarceration; to provide treatment to the 70 percent of inmates suffering from addiction, as well as offering skill-based educational services to enable former offenders to secure work; thereby, supporting them to live healthy, productive lives."
The organization works with returning citizens, employers, and community partners to remove barriers to employment so that everyone in our community can be safer, healthier, and better employed.
The League of Women Voters is a nonpartisan political organization that encourages informed and active participation in government, works to increase understanding of major public policy issues, and influences public policy through education and advocacy.
