WASHINGTON, DC — With one week to go until National Voter Registration Day, the League of Women Voters is sounding the alarm as Americans face escalating threats to their voting rights and increased barriers to participating easily and safely in the 2026 midterm elections. The League is calling on voters nationwide to register if they’re not already, check their registration status if they are, learn about their ballot at VOTE411.org, and get ready to make their voices heard this November. 

Falling on Tuesday, September 15, and celebrated annually as a nonpartisan civic holiday, National Voter Registration Day is the country’s largest single-day voter registration effort. The League has participated since its inception in 2012. Across the country, state and local Leagues will once again connect with voters at schools, libraries, community centers, naturalization ceremonies, and other locations nationwide to remind them that voting is not just their right—it is how Americans actively participate in and shape our democracy.  

"The future will be shaped by the people who show up,” said Celina Stewart, chief executive officer of the League of Women Voters. “National Voter Register Day is a reminder that democracy is not something we watch from the sidelines. It is something we build together. Get registered, get educated about who's on your ballot, make your plan, and vote.” 

She continued, “When enough of us participate, it is we the voters—not agents of chaos or confusion—who will determine the future of our communities and our country.” 

This year, National Voter Registration Day comes at a consequential moment for voters, ahead of a midterm election unlike any in recent memory. While efforts to resist election interference continue, the League is urging Americans to focus on what they can control: getting registered, knowing the voting rules in their communities, making a plan to cast their ballot, and helping others do the same. 

“National Voter Registration Day is about turning people power into action,” said Jeanette Senecal, chief of civic learning and impact at the League of Women Voters. “Please take a moment to check your registration, especially if you have recently moved or changed your name, which you can easily do at VOTE411.org. Then take the next step: ask the people in your life if they are registered, too. A text to a friend, a conversation with a family member, or sharing a trusted voter resource can help ensure that more people are ready to make their voices heard this November. The time to act is now.” 

Voters can start preparing now by: 

• Checking their voter registration on VOTE411 and updating it if necessary, particularly if they have recently moved or changed their name. 
• Learning their state’s registration requirements and deadlines, which vary across the country. 
• Making a voting plan, including deciding how and when they intend to cast their ballot. 
• Encouraging friends, family members, coworkers, and neighbors to get registered and vote-ready. 
• Using trusted, nonpartisan election information to understand the voting options and rules where they live. 
• Sharing a trusted resource with your networks. 
• Attending a National Voter Registration Day event. 

For nearly 20 years, the League’s nonpartisan election information website, VOTE411.org, has helped millions of voters get the information they need to participate confidently in elections. VOTE411, which celebrates its 20th anniversary this October, provides state-specific information on voter registration, voting rules and deadlines, polling locations, candidates, and more. 

The League encourages every eligible voter to use the week leading up to National Voter Registration Day to get vote-ready—and then use September 15 to help someone else do the same.
