Supreme Court Preserves Access to Abortion Drug Mifepristone

Public Statement

WASHINGTON — Today, the League of Women Voters of the United States issued the following statement in response to the Supreme Court ruling in FDA v. Alliance for Hippocratic Medicine.  The decision ensures continued access to the medication abortion drug mifepristone:

“Today’s ruling ensures that women and those who may become pregnant have legal access to abortion medication, which is essential to their ability to maintain bodily autonomy.

“Crucially, this decision also means that anti-abortion crusaders cannot direct the healthcare decisions of others through federal courts.

“While access to mifepristone remains unchanged, the right to reproductive healthcare is still severely restricted with the overturning of Roe v. Wade. The Court will also decide this month whether states can block emergency reproductive care that is protected by federal law.

"Democracy depends on equal rights for all people, which includes the right to bodily autonomy. The League of Women Voters believes that women and people who may become pregnant deserve the right to privacy, which ensures the freedom to make reproductive choices.”
