Across the country and locally, there are concerns about book banning as members of local groups, school boards, and libraries seek to limit access to books in classrooms and libraries. Can it happen here? That is the topic for the LWV first Friday on January 5, 2024.

The program takes place from 9:30 to 11 AM at the Cary Memorial Library 1874 Massachusetts Avenue, Lexington, MA 02420. This program has been developed in response to the national and local controversy. Note: This program will take place in the large meeting room at the Cary Library not the Community Center.

These concerns in Lexington are not new. In 2005 a Lexington parent staged a campaign about a related issue. A group, Lexington CARES, Lexington Community Action for Responsible Education, was formed at the time. More recently the Serious Talk curriculum conversation has been introduced in the Lexington schools.

Our program will include several speakers led by library director Koren Stembridge and Lexington School Committee member Kathleen M Lenihan.

This program is the fourth in the 2023-2024 LWV First Friday Forum series hosted by the League of Women Voters to promote awareness and understanding of public policy issues. There will be time for Q&A after the program.
