The School Building Committee has approved a plan, “Bloom” for the new high school and building on the current playing fields in the Center. Do you support this decision? If not, what would you propose as an alternative?
Yes, I support the SBC’s plans for Bloom. Bloom provides the most cost efficient option, delivered in the fastest time, with the least disruption to LHS students, while maximizing MSBA funding. The current site of LHS will be restored to new athletic fields post construction. The Town is fortunate that the MSBA has invited us in after just 3 years of applications and that MSBA funding will offset some costs. While costs are high, doing nothing is even costlier. Delayed and deferred maintenance continues to accrue on the current LHS building, overcrowding and inadequate educational spaces persist, and construction and material costs continue to rise every year. There has been a very coordinated and vocal group trying to throw every objection at Bloom - siting on the fields, cost, space per student. Careful analysis of each of these bares the truth that Bloom is the best option, in the fastest amount of time, with the least disruption to our students. I’ve lived in Lexington for over 12 years. From my first day here, my family knew that eventually we’d be asked to support a new LHS. Even though both of my children will have graduated by the time the new LHS opens, I wholly support this project and appreciate the effort of the SBC to create a transparent process and solicit community feedback.
