Recounts are often part of our electoral process. Most states have standards and processes in place for conducting recounts, including when the margins are very close. Americans should have confidence in election administrators and the recount process, and know that they will be working as quickly as possible to confirm the accuracy of results. It’s important to remember that recounts don’t often change the outcome.

What happens after election day?

State officials certify the results based on the laws of their state.
Then governors of each state send the results to Congress before presidential electors (Electoral College) meet on December 14th to cast their votes.
Congress certifies those votes and officially declares the winner of the presidential election on January 6th.
The president is sworn in on January 20th.
