Democratic government depends upon informed and active participation at all levels of government. Governmental bodies must protect the citizen’s right to know by giving adequate notice of proposed actions, holding open meetings, and making public records accessible.

* If you can attend the September 22nd hearing in Tallahassee, it's bound to be interesting and a show of support is always nice.
* The swearing-in of the new Utility Authority appointees is currently scheduled for October 4th at noon (with the chance that it could be postponed or cancelled.
* And finally, the local legislative delegation is meeting on October 25th, and many folks are planning to discuss issues of importance with our legislators.

Gun safety and gun violence prevention is one of the legislative priorities of the League of Women Voters of Florida, and the League of Women Voters of Alachua County supports the City of Gainesville and Alachua County in their efforts to reduce gun violence in our community. As such, we support regulations concerning handgun purchase, ownership, and use. We promote social and economic justice and the health and safety of all Americans by supporting regulations concerning the purchase, ownership, and use of handguns that consider the balance of individual constitutional rights with the general interest and welfare of the community.

The proposal, encapsulated in SJR-7, seeks to add California to the states aiming to alter the U.S. Constitution, a move that comes without a clear structure or guidelines.
