LWVUS Position on Redistricting

The League of Women Voters believes responsibility for redistricting preferably should be vested in an independent special commission, with membership that reflects the diversity of the unit government, including citizens at large, representatives of public interest groups, and members of minority groups.

Every redistricting process should include:

Support of a state redistricting process and standards that promote fair and effective representation in the state legislature and in the U.S. House of Representatives with maximum opportunity for public scrutiny. Support of legislation establishing an independent, non-partisan commission with broad-based community representation as the preferred redistricting body.
