New Google Analytics: What You Need to Know

Info Page about Google Analytics & MyLO

Each MyLO site comes ready to connect with Google Analytics, which will track your site’s traffic data, generate reports, and is free to use. Implementing Google Analytics into your MyLO site is optional, but it puts your site’s traffic data and reporting into your hands.

Google Analytics is changing

Google Analytics uses properties to organize the online entity to be tracked. Google has recently introduced a new property type, Google Analytics 4 (GA4). As MyLO site owners, we have historically been using the former property type, Universal Analytics (UA). Each MyLO site was formerly compatible with UA properties only. Now, each MyLO site can also be connected to GA4-type properties. So if your League is currently using Google Analytics, be sure to create a new GA4 property and connect it to your MyLO site prior to July 1, 2023, to avoid disruption in traffic data collection.

Glossary

These definitions were taken from Glossary (Google Analytics Help).

  • Google Analytics - A platform that collects data from your websites and apps to create reports that provide insights into your business.
  • Account - Your access point for Analytics. You need at least one account so you can have access to your Analytics properties, which contain your reports. You can have multiple accounts, and each account can have one or more properties. You can link one or more Analytics accounts to an organization.
  • Property - There are two kinds of properties: Google Analytics 4 and Universal Analytics. Universal Analytics properties will stop processing data on July 1, 2023.
  • Universal Analytics property - Universal Analytics (UA) refers to the previous generation of Google Analytics for measuring website traffic.
  • Google Analytics 4 property - Google Analytics 4 (GA4) refers to the latest Google Analytics property type that became the default Google Analytics experience after October 14, 2020. Google Analytics 4 properties can be used to measure both website traffic and app usage. Google Analytics 4 properties were formerly known as “App + Web properties” during the beta period from 2019-2020.
  • Text Format - A tool for editing and formatting text. The standard text format for MyLO pages is WYSIWYG. If you need Full HTML, you can switch the format but need to be careful with what you put on the page at this point (such as embed code).
  • WYSIWYG - Stands for “What You See Is What You Get.” An acronym used in computing to describe a method in which content is edited and formatted by interacting with an interface that closely resembles the final product. Sometimes also referred to as a visual editor.

FAQs

How does Google Analytics work?
Google Analytics is a tool that gathers information from your website to generate reports that offer valuable insights into your League. Read more from Google about Analytics.

What if my League isn’t using Google Analytics?
You don’t have to worry about the switch from UA to GA4, so no action would be necessary at this time. If you do use Google Analytics in the future, you can follow our instructions to create a new Google Analytics account and connect it with your MyLO site. You can request a report from the MyLO Team, but we highly recommend having your own access to your reports for regular reporting.

My MyLO site is connected to a UA property. What do I have to do?
If your League is currently using Google Analytics, you are most likely still using a Universal Analytics (UA) property. You will need to create a new property, specifically a Google Analytics 4 (GA4) property. Once a GA4 property is created, a snippet of code (known as the global site tag) is generated and it will need to be pasted into the appropriate spot on your homepage. You will need to use the Full HTML text format before pasting in the global site tag (not WYSIWYG). It takes Google about 48 hours to begin collecting data to be reflected in the reports.

You can follow along with our written instructions or recorded training session.

What is Full HTML? What if I paste my global site tag into WYSIWYG?
Full HTML is one of the 3 text formats available on MyLO. It is necessary to paste the global site tag to your site’s HTML, and this is accessed using the Full HTML text format. If you paste the code into the default text format (WYSIWYG), the GA4 property will not connect with your site. Be sure to set the text format to Full HTML, clear the text box, and paste in your global site tag. Leave this text format set to Full HTML to avoid interruptions.

Do I need to add the global site tag to any other page?
No -- once you add the global site tag to the appropriate spot on the homepage, you’ll just sit back and wait for Google to confirm its connection. Check out our instructions for more about confirming your global site tag is connected.

Should I remove/disconnect the UA property from my MyLO site?
When you paste in your new GA4 property’s global site tag, you’ll see the global site tag for your connected UA property. Google has announced July 1, 2023, as the date for UA properties to stop collecting data so you can choose to delete this UA global site tag from your MyLO site. If you choose not to (Google may not make this exact cutoff date), you can paste the new GA4 global site tag above or below it, but be sure not to break up the existing UA tag.
