The mission of the League of Women Voters of Sussex Highlands is to encourage active and thoughtful participation in the electoral process. High school seniors will soon be eligible to vote, and the League of Women Voters seeks to motivate them to be engaged in our democracy.
Every year the League of Women Voters of Sussex Highlands holds a scholarship competition open to Sussex County high school seniors. In the past, we have asked students to answer an essay question. This year we are excited to try something new – a poster competition. We are asking seniors to create a poster with the theme “Your Vote. Your Impact,” demonstrating the impact that their vote can have in their community, state and country.
The guidelines and rubric for the competition are attached. Awards are $500 for first place and $250 for second place.
It is our hope this endeavor will encourage students to research and think about the importance of voting in our democracy as they themselves will be making important electoral decisions in the coming years.
We are excited to see how your students respond to this challenge! The competition is open to all Sussex County high school seniors. If you have any questions, please contact us at education.lwvshnj [at] gmail.com.
Sincerely,
Karen Lavin, Chair, Education Committee, League of Women Voters Sussex Highlands
