About

The League of Women Voters of the Rivertowns encourages active and informed participation in the local governments of the Hudson River, New York communities of Croton, Ossining, Briarcliff Manor, Sleepy Hollow, Tarrytown, Irvington, Dobbs Ferry, Ardsley, Hastings, and Yonkers.

As a grassroots organization, the League of Women Voters is organized at the local, county, state and national levels. LWV of the Rivertowns, accordingly, both contributes to and derives strength from the League of Women Voters of Westchester, NY, the League of Women Voters of New York State, and the national League of Women Voters. Read our local Nonpartisan Policy and learn more about the structure of our local league in the Rivertowns League Bylaws.

The League of Women Voters is, at all levels, a nonpartisan, multi-issue, grassroots organization that encourages informed, active participation of citizens in local, county, state and national governments. It is unique among such organizations in its strict nonpartisanship — it supports and opposes issues but not particular candidates or political parties. Among many other activities, the League:

  • Educates citizens about issues, legislation and candidates, as well as their rights and responsibilities as citizens and encourages individual participation in the political process, including registering citizens to vote
  • Prepares and circulates Voter Guides at election time and sponsors candidate debates and public issue forums
  • Monitors government activities from local to national
  • Analyzes issues objectively, and, upon reaching a consensus, takes action, lobbies, and testifies regarding those issues
