CLIMATE CHANGE IS HERE: WHAT ARE WE DOING ABOUT IT?

LWV Long Beach will present it's 5th Annual Climate Change Symposium with the Aquarium of the Pacific on Sunday Jan. 13th 2019 3p-6p in Aquarium's Ocean Theater. “It is our goal to present the very latest findings and potential solutions to the problems of climate change to the Long Beach community," said Kim Ritter, president of the LWV/LBA, "especially as they affect our city, with its endangered shoreline and harbor.  We have invited four distinguished experts to present an update since last year's highly successful symposium."

The keynote speaker and moderator for the symposium will be Jerry R. Schubel, president and CEO of the Aquarium of the Pacific and lead author of the Aquarium’s Climate Resilience Assessment Report for the City of Long Beach. His presentation "Climate Change Is Here: What Are We Doing About It?" will offer a look at current and future sea-level rise and its effects, both locally and globally.

The other distinguished scientists and experts to present their findings will be:  Holly Jean Buck, research fellow at UCLA's Institute of the Environment and Sustainability; Lynne Talley, Distinguished Professor of Physical Oceanography at Scripps Institution of Oceanography, U.C. San Diego; and Bill Patzert, climate scientist and oceanographer, recently retired from California Institute of Technology's NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory, in Pasadena.

The last hour of the Symposium will feature a panel discussion and Q&A, with audience participation. The LWV will also announce the creation of an award of $1,000 to a student who has chosen to study climate change and its effects, to be selected by the Aquarium in partnership with the LWV. Attendees are asked to check in before 4:00 p.m. at the Visitors Entrance, Salk said, because of the "jam-packed" program. Attendees names will be at the front entrance of the Aquarium, and check-in will begin at 3:00 p.m.
