Saturday, January 12, 2019 - 10:00am to Sunday, January 13, 2019 - 9:45am
At the meeting, we will  discuss current LWV-Michigan positions (and therefore, our local positions) on various important topics involving government, the environment, elections, etc.  From these discussions, we will provide LWVMI with input as to which areas we want to be priorities for LWVMI and local leagues for  action/advocacy for the coming year.  The meeting begins at 10:00 AM.  Jane will provide snacks and drinks (thank you Jane!).

For our newer members, the LWVMI positions we will be discussing have been arrived at over the years via each local Michigan League conducting a study on a topic provided by LWVMI (which has been selected at LWVMI Convention by members), reviewing pertinent materials, and coming to consensus upon what will eventually lead to an LWVMI position on the chosen topic.  Consensus questions are provided to each local league by LWVMI, and we have a special meeting to review and discuss these questions prior to submitting our discussion results to LWVMI.  From all local league's consensus results that are reported, LWVMI arrives at the final position language.  A very similar procedure is used by  LWVUS to arrive at our national  positions which relies upon  input from  local leagues  around the country.

All of  this  leads to where we  focus our action and advocacy efforts on all levels of LWV.  Definitely a "grass roots" procedure!

The meeting will begin with a short agenda covering current local issues and we will then proceed to discussion and review of existing our LWVMI positions.  There is also opportunity for us to provide input to LWVMI suggesting a possible new study, or a re-study of an existing position for  revision.

We ask that members visit LWVMI.org and click on "positions"   Link: http://lwvmi.org/positions.html.  The 16 LWVMI positions  are listed and explained.  We ask that each participant come prepared with his/her top three positions they would like us and LWVMI to focus on in the coming year.

At the meeting, participants will receive a packet with more details regarding each position, but we do hope you will visit the LWVMI website to do some of your own review and study prior to coming to the meeting.  We will then break into groups to study and discuss the chosen positions, and then in the end we will arrive at a consensus (this is not a vote per se) as to where our local LWV would like to see LWVMI and local Michigan leagues devote their time and efforts in the coming year.
