Article 43 on the 2024 Town Warrant is asking if the Town will authorize and request the Select Board to petition the General Court of the Commonwealth for Home Rule Legislation to allow any citizens in the Town of Lexington, who have reached the age of 16 or older, to register and vote in municipal elections within the Town, or to take any action in relative thereto. Would you support this article? Why or why not?
I will support this article if I am elected to Town Meeting. I believe that it would be positive to engage people in their community at a younger age. They are learning about government and civics in school and they care about our schools and our community, often more so than people 18 and older. They are directly impacted by those who are elected and the results of town meeting actions. At their age, studies have shown that they have an appropriate level (similar to those eighteen and older) of intellectual maturity to be able to make sound decisions. Studies have also shown that younger voters tend to continue to vote which is also positive.
