Article 43 on the 2024 Town Warrant is asking if the Town will authorize and request the Select Board to petition the General Court of the Commonwealth for Home Rule Legislation to allow any citizens in the Town of Lexington, who have reached the age of 16 or older, to register and vote in municipal elections within the Town, or to take any action in relative thereto. Would you support this article? Why or why not?
I would support the passing of Article 43 authorizing the Select Board to petition the General Court of the Commonwealth for Home Rule Legislation allowing Lexington citizens 16 or older to vote in municipal elections. Including 16- and 17-year-olds in participation in local elections is a way to foster civic engagement. I believe we should give young people the opportunity to engage in civic life at an earlier age to encourage the development of the lifelong habit of voting. I also believe it is an opportunity for the community to hear about issues of concern to our youth such as climate change, gun safety and mental health issues. Letting their voices be heard at the ballot box can inform the decisions we make as a community.
