County elections are expensive! Our March program will look at those costs, and how they affect the ability of special districts, such as fire, water and cemetery, to field slates of candidates. It seems that for many of these small districts, the cost of an election is prohibitive; instead, districts may just have the number of needed candidates for the number of open seats, resulting in appointments rather than an actual election - not really very democratic, is it?

Our Registrar of Voters, Katrina Bartolomie, will join our Zoom meeting to explain how election costs are determined, and how those costs are apportioned to various districts, candidates, and measures.

Our county no longer receives any funds from the state for conducting elections; the county budget only covers county-wide elections and the supervisor races. The elections department is required by law to cover other costs by charging the cities, candidates, or special districts.

Join us for a lively discussion of this topic.
