WASHINGTON, DC — The League of Women Voters of the United States issued the following statement honoring the life and legacy of Rev. Jesse Jackson:

"The League of Women Voters of the United States mourns the passing of Rev. Jesse Jackson, a towering leader in the fight for civil rights, voting rights, and political empowerment. For decades, Rev. Jackson stood at the forefront of movements that sought to expand access to democracy, elevate marginalized voices, and call our nation to live up to its highest ideals. 

"Through his leadership of organizations such as the Rainbow PUSH Coalition, Rev. Jackson championed voter registration, ballot access, and political representation, with a particular and enduring focus on empowering Black voters and other communities too often pushed to the margins. The League of Women Voters worked closely with Rev. Jackson and the Rainbow PUSH Coalition in support of the passage of the National Voter Registration Act, reflecting a shared commitment to removing barriers to registration and bringing more people into our democracy. 

"Rev. Jackson’s legacy is one of moral courage, relentless advocacy, and a deep belief in the power of people to shape their future. As we mourn his passing, we are reminded that the work he led is far from finished. The League of Women Voters is committed to building on his legacy and carrying his fight forward by defending voting rights, expanding democratic participation, and ensuring that the promise of our democracy is realized for all."
