Voting rights have undergone innumerable assaults in recent years, to the point where many Americans now fear that our democracy is at grave risk. The Adult Religious Education and Spiritual Development team is pleased to announce “Voting Rights Under Fire,” a two-session class that will focus on the historical, present day, and future of voting privileges in America.
Each class will include discussion, readings, exercises, videos, handouts, and much more. The first session on April 18 will focus on national issues, including Supreme Court rulings that have affected voting rights and voter suppression laws. It will also feature Stacey Abrams’ WARE Lecture to the Unitarian Universalist Association’s General Assembly in June 2021. She is currently running for governor of Georgia for the second time.
The second session on May 2 will explore voting issues in North Carolina and include a video conversation between former Charlotte Mayor Jennifer Roberts and retired North Carolina Supreme Court Justice Robert Orr. They will talk about their work with the Carter Center for Safe and Fair Elections and basic democratic norms. A video from Michael Dickerson, Director of the Mecklenburg County Board of Elections, will also be featured.
This program will be facilitated by Suzanne Elsberry, co-president of the League of Women Voters Charlotte Mecklenburg, and UUCC member Jinny Sullivan, Precinct Chair-Mecklenburg County Democratic Party.
