Mission: Educate and advocate for environmental issues that impact citizens of Charlotte and Mecklenburg County.

Hosted Events

  • Taiwo Jayeiba, Director of the Charlotte Planning Department and Assistant City Manager spoke to LWVCM about Charlotte’s 2040 Comprehensive Plan, including mass transit improvements, green infrastructure and equitable resource access.Charlotte Future 2040 Plan
  • Barry Gullet, of Catawba Consulting shared the vision of Catawba Wateree Management Group,a coalition planning measures to protect our water supply and sustain the future of a water basin supplying over 2 million people. Catawba Wateree Management
  • John Searby and Brandon Jones, Executive Director and Chief Scientist for Catawba Riverkeeper Foundation discussed how they protect and enhance our river system through water sampling, cleaning and public advocacy.   • David Caldwell, Water Quality Superviser of Charlotte Mecklenburg Stormwater Services discussed the pressures of Charlotte's increased population and aging infrastructure on pollution of our lakes, rivers and streams. Stormwater Services

Impact Writing Projects

  • To Mayor Vi Lyles and Charlotte City Council on March 22, 2021. "As the Council begins to consider the adoption of the (2040) plan, the League wants to emphasize the need for a comprehensive plan and to highlight a few aspects that are particularly important for inclusion: 
  • Measures that will sustain adequate water quantity and quality for our growing area 
  • Increasing and protecting the tree canopy over Charlotte 
  • Measures to promote clean air 
  • Correcting adverse storm water issues 
  • Requiring sustainable development practices in the private and public sectors 
  • Including environmental justice principles in development plans 
  • Measures to support walkable communities 

We would welcome the opportunity to participate in a diverse task force to advise the implementation of the Charlotte 2040 Future Comprehensive Plan. "

Excerpts from LWVNC State Convention Public Policy Provisions May 15, 2021

Promote an environment beneficial to life through the protection and wise management of natural resources in the public interest by recognizing the interrelationships of air quality, energy, land use, waste management, and water resources. Promote public understanding and participation in decision-making as essential elements of responsible and responsive management of our natural resources.
