Selecting Program for Advocacy

Selecting Program for Advocacy

In League, “program” means the issues that we choose for concerted study, education, and action at local, state, and national levels. Program can include both education and action, and the issues chosen are based always on positions that have been studied and adopted by the League.

The Program Planning process is part of what makes the League a grassroots organization. The LWVSC Agenda for Action provides the results of many years of studies by members on a wide range of issues that are important to members. During Program Planning each League member has the opportunity to influence the selection of issues on which the local, state, and national League will focus time, talent, and money for educational programming and member advocacy.

Based on the results of the program planning process, the state Board of Directors makes recommendations to the biennial convention delegates about the program to be adopted for the coming two year period.

During 2019-2021, LWVSC is focusing its educational advocacy on three priorities. As directed by Convention 2019, working groups have been established in all three areas, to encourage and coordinate initiatives around the state.

1. Redistricting
2. Gender & Racial Equity (including the ERA)
3. Public Education

In this connection, a new position was adopted at Convention 2019, that will be included in the upcoming edition of Agenda for Action:

The LWVSC supports gender and racial equity, including ratification of
the Equal Rights Amendment, and the promotion of fairness in hiring,
advancement, pay, and in representation in public appointments.

Our primary direct lobbying initiatives, determined by the state Board of Directors, are shaped by the following:
> guidance from national LWV,
> opportunities that arise in the Statehouse re the good government areas in which we take a leading role, and
> input from local league boards.

We will keep members informed through emails from LWV of South Carolina, the SC VOTER, Action Alerts, and this site about what's happening in these areas. We will let you know when we need you to take action. Our lobbying efforts will succeed only if we have the help of a significant number of League members who contact their own legislators about these important issues.
